The most common mathematical error that destroys new retail businesses is confusing Margin with Markup. While they sound similar, they are mathematically entirely different concepts.

• Markup: This is a percentage added strictly to your cost. For example, if a product costs you $100 to make, and you apply a 50% markup, you add $50. Your final selling price is $150.
• Margin (Gross Margin): This is a percentage of the final selling price that is profit. If you want a 50% margin on that same $100 product, you cannot just sell it for $150 (because $50 profit on a $150 sale is only a 33.3% margin). To achieve a true 50% margin, you must sell the product for $200.
